Sharing is caring – here are some questions that we’ve received from other drivers. We hope they help you understand what you’ll get from us.
Yes, if you drive a taxi, you need specialist taxi insurance. Driving a taxi is different to driving passengers in a car – after all, you are driving for hire and reward. You therefore need specialist taxi insurance depending on the kind of taxi you are driving. The cover you need will depend on how you operate and the requirements of the local councils in which you drive. We can help you with exactly what you need. Give us a call!
Public hire taxi insurance (Hackney carriages) covers taxi drivers who are licensed for immediate hire and where no pre-booking is required. These are the taxis you hail on the street or pick up at taxi ranks.
Public hire taxi insurance typically includes cover for hire and reward, passenger liability, public liability, vehicle damage, theft or fire and plate insurance.
Private Hire taxi insurance covers taxi drivers who operate by pre-booking only. They cannot pick up passengers on the street or at taxi ranks. They include minicabs, chauffeurs, Uber/Bolt drivers.
Private hire taxi insurance typically covers hire and reward, passenger liability, vehicle cover (damage, theft, fire) and optional extras such as legal expenses or a replacement vehicle.
When you think of the number of hours a taxi driver is on the road, the number of passengers in their cars and the kind of driving they typically do (often in urban, congested areas), they are exposed to a lot more risks that standard drivers. As a consequence, taxi drivers have a much higher risk profile than standard drivers, which results in higher insurance premiums.
Why do taxi drivers have a higher risk profile? They tend to:
It can be harder to get taxi insurance with no previous experience, but it’s not impossible. Insurers will require a few extra checks. As a minimum, you must have a UK driving license and pass specific DBS checks. In some cases, you may need to pass a taxi driver assessment. We can provide all the details you need to know. Speak with us if you have any questions.
You can get immediate cover to drive your taxi as long as you meet the legal requirements, such as holding a UK driving license, passing the DBS checks and you have a valid taxi license. Speak to us about instant or same day cover.
As a specialist taxi insurance broker, we work with a range of insurers that enable us to cover a wide range of taxi vehicles including public hire, private hire, Uber drivers, Bolt drivers, chauffer drivers, mini busses (for schools, charities), couriers (including Amazon, DPD, DHL, etc).
Some specialist taxi insurance policies will cover drivers for personal use, but some policies have clear distinctions between professional use and personal use. It’s best to check with us, so we can confirm for you. We’ll be able to do that quickly and easily for you over the phone.
As a rule of thumb, insurers will often (but not always) transfer your personal car no claims bonus to your taxi insurance policy, but it’s important to check and confirm, as the requirements differ between insurers and depending on what kind of car insurance you have. Please call us, so we can confirm for you and make sure you’re on the road safely – whether you’re driving for personal or professional purposes.
Valid for Uber, Bolt, food delivery, couriers & all UK councils.
